3G Network Closure: Overseas device variants

We have identified additional devices that do not support the main frequency (700mhz) that we use for 4G coverage. These will need to be upgraded.

We have recently discovered a new set of device variants that have been sourced overseas which will be impacted by the 3G closure on 31st August 2024. These models are unable to take full advantage of local networks, including Australia’s Band 28 (700Mhz), which Telstra uses for 4G and the devices will need to be upgraded to a new compatible device.

Many of these devices may have been purchased in Australia although they are sourced from overseas and are designed for countries where 700Mhz capability is not utilised for 4G. For example, a device sourced from the USA, is likely to be different to the equivalent model customised for the Australian market.

These devices will remain connected to the Telstra Mobile Network after the 3G Network Closure on 31 August 2024, however, they are likely to have reduced and intermittent network connectivity, including an inability to call emergency services like Triple zero. We therefore strongly recommend that they are replaced.

3G RVA and SMS device checker updates

We are planning to include these devices in the 3G Network Recorded Voice Announcement (hardware replacement) list and the 3G exit SMS device checker (“3498”) list by 9th August 2024.

Action required

You will need to communicate with your end customers, explain that calls to emergency services like triple zero will be impacted once the 3G network closes and tell them that it is important they act now.

We appreciate your continued efforts

We remain committed to providing you with relevant information about how your customers will likely be impacted by the 3G Network Closure.

We continue to work through the dynamic data sets available to us and appreciate your continued efforts to communicate with your impacted customers.
